Starting up with Rachel’s Runners in the very first year of our Learn to Run program and proving to herself that with the right support and a lot of determination she can do anything, here’s Kathryn…
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Kathryn and I’m 34 years old. I work full time and am learning to love running. I also love travelling and reading.
Tell us a bit about you and running – how, when, why.
I started running with Rachel’s Runners on the 1st June 2013. One of my friends Ev had posted on Facebook that she had just completed her first ever 5km run and was asking if anyone was interested in joining, so I thought “why not”? I was always a swimmer at school and played water polo, but I never really liked running. So on the 1st of June I got my butt out of bed and went to meet Rachel and the beautiful girls I now call my running family.
Yes I’m slow and BOTP (Back of the Pack) alongside my awesome BOTP crew Alex and Tarnz. Without these two awesome ladies I think I would have given up on a lot of occasions.
I can say running has changed my life in so many positive ways. I have made some amazing friends but I have also managed to change my mindset as well.
On January 3rd last year I walked/jogged my first half marathon with two beautiful girls Kim and Stephanie. We had a ball; talked and laughed, and at times I forgot what I was doing. I wanted to give up at the halfway point, but I kept hearing Rachel’s voice in my head saying “DON’T STOP” and “NEVER GIVE UP”.
What’s the best thing about running for you?
The best thing is the friends I have made through Rachel’s Runners. Also, knowing that when I finally finish Rachel and the girls are always there with a smile cheering me on.
What’s your favourite piece of running equipment?
My Nike watch and my Rachel’s Runners singlet.
What’s your biggest challenge with running?
I now have my mind in the right place, I just need the rest of my body to catch up.
Any tips for fellow runners?
Get out there and do it. If I can, anyone can!
