Today some of our team took on the Rebel Run Sydney event. We had runners across all distances – 3km, 10km and the half marathon.
When we head to fun runs it’s always a mix of excitement, anticipation, nervousness and tiredness from getting up so early! Nothing is more apparent though than the support and friendship amongst us all. New runners and those who’ve run in more than a few races, we are all just a great bunch of friends who love getting out for a run together and cheering each other on. Today’s event was no exception.
Personally, I did not enjoy this race (I did the half marathon). It was very windy, a course which involved 3 dreaded ‘laps’ and at one point a semi trailer pulled out of a driveway across the running track forcing us to come to a stop!! Nevertheless, I set a goal to come in under 2 hours and that I did in a time of 1:57. Not my best over the half marathon distance, but still I got it done.
On a brighter note, not everyone had a bad race. One of our newest members Melissa ran her first 10km without stopping and another, Sommer, entered her first fun run and ran her first 3km non stop. So proud of them and I love the way Sommer sums up her race –
“I had a great run through Sydney Olympic Park, the atmosphere was amazing and vibrant. There were a couple of stacks from little kiddies but most of them kept up and perhaps even setting the pace for the rest of their family. I nearly tripped over a couple as they stopped dead in front me. I enjoyed passing by the Olympic history and made sure I looked around and absorbed it all. I struggled going up Olympic parade as it had a bit of a slant on it and the wind was blowing against me. Once I got to the halfway point it was downhill and my speed picked up. Entering the Athletic centre was a huge buzz and I pleaded with my legs to keep going, there was no way I was going to walk that track. I choked on a few bubbles but kept going. There were people cheering along the sidelines even though they didn’t know me and I saw my family at the end proud as punch. I crossed the finish line out of breath (suffering a chest infection) and collected my medal with a great sense of accomplishment. What a great feeling!”
Our team of runners pulled out many PB’s today and I am very proud of them all. Well done everyone for getting out there and doing your best! Now I’m really looking forward to our next Rachel’s Runners 5km Fun Run in December. Stay tuned for that one!
